In 1973, homosexuality was dropped from the Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. It seemed discrimination for homosexuals was more the issue than sexual deviance or psychiatric pathology. Finally, don't ask, don't tell has been repealed.

I have many patients from the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered communities. I also have old Asian female, young Black male, White baby boomer, Jewish and Atheist patients. I see American Indian, Latino, Persian and Filipino patients. I've seen Democrat straight and Republican gay military enlisted. I've even seen Eskimo patients. All of these people have taught me something that I didn't know, along the way. Their uniqueness has taught me about our sameness. They have made me be a better doctor. They have made me be a better person.

Merry Christmas!
