What is a psychiatrist?

Please refer to this link from the American Psychiatric Association (APA), a great succinct resource easily explaining what a psychiatrist is and what we do.

What is the biopsychosocial method?

Our 4-step approach is organized according to the biopsychosocial model. With this model, we examine abnormal biology that causes abnormal thoughts, emotions, or behaviors. Once there is the resolution of biological issues like insomnia, anxiety (fight or flight), restlessness, poor concentration, etc., we then move to abnormal thoughts, particularly the inability to recognize what might be happening, like work, interpersonal stress, or other past factors still affecting you. Therapy like CBT or other styles of psychotherapy has a major impact on daily and future functioning. Optimal social functioning is achieved with normal biological and psychological functioning, creating realized goals and meaningful relationships.

What do we treat?

We can diagnose and manage just about anything affecting your mental health. Dr. Bacchus’ background is extensive and subspecialized not only in general psychiatry and addiction medicine but psychosomatic medicine (complex medical and mental health issues ex: maternal and infant postpartum health).

What is medication assisted treatment?

Did you know that studies show medication plus psychotherapy works the best for most mental disorders? Medications all by themselves are also more effective than therapy alone. Knowing this, we at Psychiatry Unplugged practice these best-practice standards. If you choose to work with a therapist, we suggest you do this first for 2-4 months. If you do not experience a 50% or greater improvement in your functioning, then speaking to a psychiatrist would be most helpful. Again, we find if you do just one or two aspects of the biopsychosocial model, you are wasting time. We do advocate starting with a psychiatric evaluation first. That way, a diagnosis can be made that helps focus your work with a therapist. If medication is not recommended, we’ll tell you then. If they could benefit you, we only use FDA approved medications. We don’t push pills.

Do you do virtual appointments?

Yes, we do! Dr. Bacchus sees many patients from Los Angeles to New York and other parts of the world abroad. Our platform is HIPPA compliant video software. Prescriptions are sent electronically to pharmacies all over the country. All we need is a pharmacy phone number to start your treatment plan.

Why is mental health important?

Because mental health is HEALTH. Think about it for a moment: your brain is everything that is you and your ability to care for yourself and move into a vibrant future. Patients who suffer heart attacks are more likely to die if they are depressed. The reverse is also true. If you are depressed, you are less likely to survive a heart attack. This mind/body duality is the sum of both the brain and the body together. Abnormal thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are not character flaws. Health is the normal brain and body functioning (…wait for it); for a socially functioning, successful, and happy life.

We’ll help you make this happen and get you there.
