What insurance do you accept?
Health insurance companies will establish contracts with healthcare providers and pharmacies. These healthcare providers make up the network and are considered to be in-network. It is always best to seek care from healthcare providers who are in your network.
In-network refers to doctors, clinics, and hospitals that cooperate or work with specific insurance companies, HMOs, and other coverage providers. When these groups accept the insurance plan that you are a part of, this is often referred to as being in-network, or they can be referred to as participating providers.
When you choose to see a doctor or clinic that doesn’t accept your insurance plan, they are considered to be out of network.
The important thing to keep in mind when considering whether to work with a healthcare provider that is in-network or out-of-network has to do with the cost. The insurance company may not want to pay someone who is out of network, or may only pay for part of the services you need. If you wish to work with someone who is out of network, you will need to work with your insurance company to find out what your options are.
The best reason to work with someone who is in-network is that you will save money. Providers who are in your network have established agreements with your insurance company that save money. These providers have agreed to accept the insurance company’s plan and rates.
If you choose to work with a healthcare provider who is out of network, you can expect to pay additional costs and fees for the care that you receive. You can expect to pay higher co-pays. You may also have to pay more for the care you receive if the healthcare provider charges more than your insurance pays to in-network providers.
Choosing to go with a healthcare provider who is in-network is always easier. There is less paperwork that is required with doctors and clinics that have already established contracts with your insurance company. This can also mean that you may have no out-of-pocket expenses when working with someone who is in your network. Or, you can be more assured that you will be reimbursed if you need to pay upfront for your care.
By choosing a healthcare provider who is in-network, you can be assured that the care you are getting meets a certain level of quality. The insurance company and healthcare provider will establish and maintain standards of care that will make it easier for you to trust that you are getting quality care.
“Out of network” and “out of pocket” refer to two different things.
An out-of-network provider is a healthcare provider who has not agreed to a contract to be a part of a network of healthcare providers that works with a specific insurance carrier.
“Out of pocket” refers to having to pay for your healthcare services with your own money. These expenses are not reimbursed by your insurance company or HMO. Out-of-pocket expenses can include things like deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance for covered services.
